Her Story

Josefina Calí

Our Founder Josefina Calí

LMHC-MA, LPC

Josefina Calí was born in Argentina and displayed a remarkable aptitude for humanitarianism from an early age. At just 10 years old, she began to organize and implement initiatives that impacted the well-being of the community she resided in.

A trip through Europe for nearly a year at the age of six with her parents and siblings awakened her spirit and ignited her thirst for history, culture, and wisdom.

She grew up in an environment nurtured by the unconditional love of her Renaissance parents, and through them, she received the constant inspiration of service in the area of health and the arts.

Her father, Dr. Leonardo Calí, was a renowned Italian-Argentinean medical doctor who, along with his artistic skills, exercised his profession with dedication and love. He contributed greatly to the well-being of his community and his patients, providing voluntary medical assistance and teaching those living in the neediest sector without access to better education.

Her mother, Frieda Hoffmann, an outstanding teacher who is incredibly dedicated to community service, together with her husband, Dr. Leonardo Calí, stimulated in her daughter Josefina the love and curiosity for reading, writing, science, and the arts. She could read and write by the age of four.

Many things influenced Josefina Calí during her career as a mental health provider: a loving family environment, the encounter and the respect toward the neighbor that allowed her understanding and empathy, and her innate therapeutic qualities and abilities.

She received her Diploma of Honor as a Psychologist at the prestigious University of Buenos Aires, and obtained her License of Mental Health Counselor at the University of New York. She currently serves as a Counselor in Mental Health and Multilingual Psychotherapist, serving the multicultural community of the greater New York area and neighboring states.

With almost 48 years of professional experience, Josefina Calí approaches her practice by integrating, among others, the disciplines of psychology, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and psychodiagnosis to treat her patients as holistic beings. It is for this reason that she has always studied and perfected psychotherapeutic techniques, considering the mind, body, and context as a unit, and where the development of creativity is also a motivator of growth and evolution.

One of her postgraduate studies in Research in Psychodiagnosis, Rorschach Test, and Graphic and Psychometric Tests, performed with the renowned Prof. Ofelia Vázquez from 1979 until her death in 1997, nourished her deeply. The unity of man and man with the world, the basic referent to which Ofelia Vázquez appealed, enriched with her teachings, her vision of the human, the corporal psychism, and human behavior in its various aspects of health, culture, and society.

Throughout her career, Josefina Calí treated her patients in both private and institutional practices, extending her reach and influence to corporate counseling, as well as an Expert of Justice. She worked as a Professor at the University of Buenos Aires and at the National University of Comahue – Patagonia. She is a specialist and professor in Psychodiagnostics, Rorschach Test, and other Projective and Graphic Tests. She has presented at National and International Congresses, collaborated with several organizations dedicated to health, and also appeared on television and radio.

Today, Josefina Calí is in a new chapter of her psychotherapeutic and community career, opening a space dedicated to inspiring and motivating the evolution, progress, and psychophysical well-being of people of different ages and ethnicities. This space is called: AVINOMN, based on Virgilio: Amor Vincit Omnia — “Love conquers all”.

Josefina Calí

Josefina Calí

LMHC-MA, LPC

Josefina Calí was born in Argentina and displayed a remarkable sense of compassion and concern for others from an early age. At just ten years old, she began organizing and carrying out initiatives that contributed to the well-being of the community in which she lived.

A nearly year-long journey through Europe which began when she was five, together with her parents and siblings, awakened her interest in history, culture, and the pursuit of knowledge. She celebrated her sixth birthday during the journey, while visiting a great-aunt in Germany.

She grew up in an environment nurtured by the unconditional love of her Renaissance parents, and through them, she received the constant inspiration of service in the areas of health and the arts. Her father, Dr. Leonardo Calí, was a distinguished Italian-Argentine physician and clinical surgeon who also possessed a strong artistic sensibility. He practiced medicine with dedication and compassion, providing voluntary medical assistance and teaching people in underserved communities who had limited access to educational opportunities.

He also contributed to the cultural and artistic life of the community through projects that enriched the city’s cultural spaces, including the renovation and transformation of the theater and stage of the Italian Circle and the creation of an amphitheater-fountain in one of the city’s parks. He and Frieda also shared a love of painting and exhibited their work.

Throughout his life, he received numerous national and international recognitions, all initiated by people who knew him and held his work, dedication, and service to others in high regard.

Her mother, Frieda Hoffmann, is an outstanding educator who served for many years as a school principal in a hardworking, modest community, where she and her staff made a lasting contribution to the lives of the families they served. She has also been a constant source of support to her husband, Dr. Leonardo Calí, with whom she shared a longstanding commitment to community service.

Among their many activities together, they offered free premarital courses for couples for many years, combining their experience and dedication to help young couples prepare for married life.

Together, they encouraged in Josefina and her three siblings a love of and curiosity about reading, writing, science, and the arts. Josefina learned to read and write by the age of four and attended first grade as an informal student. When the school inspector, unaware of her age, examined her, she demonstrated the knowledge required for first grade and was advanced accordingly.

Today, Josefina continues to share with her mother frequent and enriching conversations and reflections on culture and world events.

Many influences shaped Josefina Calí throughout her professional life, including a loving family environment, a deep respect for others that nurtured her understanding and empathy, and her natural therapeutic qualities and abilities.

She earned her degree in Psychology with Honors from the prestigious University of Buenos Aires in Argentina and went on to develop a professional career spanning nearly five decades.

She currently works as a licensed mental health counselor and multilingual psychotherapist, serving multicultural communities in New York, New Jersey, and Florida. With almost 48 years of professional experience, Josefina Calí has developed an approach informed by a range of disciplines, including counseling, psychotherapy, psychodiagnostic approaches, psychoanalytic perspectives, and psychological assessment.

She has continued throughout her career to study and refine her psychotherapeutic practice, viewing the individual as a whole and recognizing the unity of mind, body, and context. Creativity has also played an important role in her understanding of human development, growth, and change.

One of the most influential chapters of her professional education was her postgraduate study and training in psychodiagnosis, the Rorschach method, and graphic and psychometric assessment under the renowned Professor Ofelia Vázquez, from 1979 until Vázquez’s death in 1997.

Her teachings profoundly enriched Josefina’s understanding of the unity of the individual and the individual’s relationship with the world. As Ofelia Vázquez expressed it, “el psiquismo corporal (no hay otro)” — literally, “the bodily psyche (there is no other)” — a conception that also deepened Josefina’s understanding of human behavior in its many dimensions, including health, culture, and society. And, as her own personal and professional journey has continued to unfold, Josefina has increasingly recognized the spiritual dimension of human existence as an essential part of the human experience and of her understanding of growth and development.

Throughout her career, Josefina Calí has worked in both private and institutional settings. Her professional experience also includes serving as a court-appointed expert in Argentina and preparing professional evaluations and reports in the United States for matters related to immigration.

She taught at the University of Buenos Aires and the National University of Comahue in Patagonia. She has specialized in and taught psychodiagnostics, the Rorschach method, and other projective and graphic assessment methods. She has presented at national and international congresses, collaborated with organizations dedicated to health, and participated in radio and television.

Today, Josefina Calí enters a new chapter in her professional and community work, creating a space dedicated to inspiring and supporting the evolution, development, and psychophysical well-being of people of different ages and backgrounds.

This space is called AVINOMN, a name inspired by the Latin phrase Amor Vincit Omnia — “Love Conquers All.”
